Frequently asked questions about saz lessons
Can I take a free trial lesson first?
Yes. You can request a free trial lesson without any obligation. Afterwards we discuss which lesson format and group suit you best.
Do I need to be able to play the saz already?
No. Beginners are welcome. We start with posture, stroke technique, tuning and the first melodies, and build up the level step by step.
Is the saz difficult to learn?
Learning to play the saz is a gradual process. Beginners can start without previous musical experience. Progress depends on practice, guidance and individual learning pace.
Do you also teach saz to adults?
Yes. We teach children from the age of 8, young people and adults, in groups as well as in private or duo lessons.
What is the difference between saz and bağlama?
Bağlama is the most commonly used name for this Anatolian long-necked lute. In the Netherlands and Turkey the word saz is often used as a general term. In our lessons we work with different types and tunings.
Do I need to own a saz before my first lesson?
No. A saz is available for you to use during your free trial lesson. Your teacher can help you choose a suitable instrument before you decide to buy one. For regular lessons, having your own instrument eventually becomes important so that you can practise at home.
Where do the saz lessons take place?
The lessons take place at The Saz Academy, Ouwerdingenpad 3 in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
Can families apply for financial support through the Stadspas or Jeugdfonds?
Eligible families may be able to receive support for children’s music lessons through Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur; an Amsterdam Stadspas can be relevant to the assessment. The Saz Academy can help families with the application process. Support is not guaranteed: approval depends on the fund’s eligibility requirements and assessment.
Can I also learn long-neck or short-neck bağlama?
Yes. The lessons can be tailored to short neck, long neck, bağlama düzeni and the repertoire that fits your goal.
Should beginners choose a short-neck or long-neck bağlama?
